Health problems caused by lack of Iodine are many and include hypothyoidism. The most common early symptoms are mental and physical fatigue, weakness, weight gain, and depression. One or more of the following symptoms usually appear later: poor memory, slow thought process, drowsiness, slow speech, thinning of eyebrows, hoarseness, poor circulation, dry and flaky skin, decreased taste and smell, menstrual irregularities, skin thickening, puffy face, puffy hands and feet, swelling of extremities, overall swelling, muscle spasms, muscle atrophy, or joint stiffness. Hypothyroidism increases the risk of elevated cholesterol levels, heart disease and diabetes (diabetes mellitus). This occurs even by moderately decreased thyroid production.
A lack of iodine intake during pregnancy and early childhood results in impaired cognitive and motor development in young children. Kelp health benefits of Iodine can also improve the condition of hair, skin, nails and teeth. For the general adult population, one capsule per day with food is recommended. For children over 4 years old, half a capsule per day with food, juice, or in a smoothie is recommended.
While most other kelp seaweeds are farmed (particularly in France, Ireland and Japan), Seagreens products are made from wild seaweed plants harvested some 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle in cold, clear waters 50 miles off the Lapland coast of Norway. They are cut and air dried within hours of the point of harvest. The Seagreens company’s carefully rotated, sustainable harvesting practices ensure continued plant growth and cause no damage to the marine environment.
Seagreens production and processing are certified in Norway and in the UK in accordance with the world’s highest biodynamic and organic standards. Seagreens Iodine typically contains 350 mcg of Iodine per capsule. Seagreens is Vegan and Kosher U certified and contains no additives of any kind, whereas kelp tablets are synthetic supplements, containing one or more excipients, such as flowing agents, preservatives, stabilizers, binding agents, and sometimes bulking agents. It is not possible to successfully ‘tabletise’ seaweed without using unwelcome incipients.
