What Are Enzymes?

An enzyme is a protein within a cell that is responsible for the chemical reactions within our body. They are produced naturally in the body (the Pancreas) but can be sourced from various fruits such as kiwi, ginger, mango avocado, kimchi, and miso.

What Do They Do?

Their main function is to help the digestive system function properly. There are three types of digestive enzymes which all have different responsibilities and digest different Enzymes.

  • Amylase - breaks down starches and carbohydrates into sugars.
  • Protease - breaks down proteins into amino acids.
  • Lipase - breaks down lipids, which are fats and oils, into glycerol and fatty acids.

Do I Need An Enzyme Supplement?

You may need a supplement if you suffer from one of the following conditions as they can reduce the number of enzymes in your body:

  • Pancreatitis
  • Celiac Disease
  • Type 1 Diabetes
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Pancreatic Cancer

Other factors can also include certain medications and poor diet. Heavy drinking and high-calorie foods can have a negative effect on the pancreas and it won't be able to produce any enzymes.

The exact amount and how often you need to take them will vary for each person. Some need to take a supplement once a day others might need one before every meal. They also give relief to other digestive issues including gas/ bloating, acid reflux, and diarrhea.
